Rubicon Public Meeting, December 4, 2004

About 100 folks attended the public meeting Dec. 4, 2004 in Placerville, CA, at the fairgrounds. The workshop was conducted by Steve Petersen of Environmental Stewardship & Planning (ESP) in Marshall Hall from 11am to 3pm.

The key component of the workshop was to allow questions and answers from the audience about the proposed solutions to the long term health of the Rubicon Trail. Many options were discussed on issues from law enforcement, to bathrooms, to designated camping, to camping reservations, to trail user agreements.

The proposals include:

Number of Vehicles on the trail (carrying capacity)

Reserved camping at Spider and Buck

Designated camping only every where.

Mandatory pack it out for sanitation issues.

Trail Use Agreement wherein everyone would carry this like a campfire permit (with some limits suggested).

EVERYONE who cares about the Rubicon should take this opportunity to comment on the proposals. Some of these items are controversial and have little consensus among users. Some are already advocated by the users such as Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR). YOUR input is needed.

Visit the web site of El Dorado County, download the file or request the CD version, and make your comments. Contact the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs if you would like to follow their input suggestions. We hope to have some bullet point suggestions for you soon.

The next public meeting to discuss these proposals and our input will be January 22, 2005. More on this soon.
